Advocacy Collective Claims to Have Extracted Countless of Music Files from the Streaming Giant

A digital rights group has claimed to have scraped a vast number of songs from Spotify and is getting ready to release them online.

Potential Boost for AI Development

Observers noted the apparent leak could aid artificial intelligence firms searching for data to train their models.

A group known as Anna’s Archive reported it had scraped 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million rows of associated data such as artist and record names. Spotify, which carries more than 100 million tracks, stated that the leak did not constitute its full catalog.

“We have identified and disabled the malicious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” said a company representative.

The Swedish company, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, further explained that an inquiry into unauthorised access identified a external actor scraped public metadata and used illicit methods to bypass DRM protections.

Group's Stated Mission and Concerns

Spotify does not think the audio acquired by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for providing links to copyright-infringing books, wrote in a blog it wanted to create a ‘historical repository’ for music.

The group asserted the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by Spotify users and would be shared via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a means of sharing large data files online.

“Of course Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic start,” commented Anna’s Archive, which frames its mission as “safeguarding humanity’s information and heritage”.

Model Development and Intellectual Property Battleground

Ed Newton-Rex for defending artists’ rights, said the breached music would probably be used for training AI models.

“Training on illegally sourced material is sadly common in the tech sector, so this stolen music is highly likely to be used instructing AI models,” he stated.

The group's website makes references to a large online archive, a vast online archive of pirated books that has allegedly been leveraged by the parent company of Facebook to train its systems.

A founder of an AI startup posted on LinkedIn that individuals of the public could in principle “create their own private free version of the service”. The executive said it could also enable tech companies to “train on modern music at scale”.

Copyright has become a key issue between creatives, writers and content creators on one side and AI companies on the other.

Policy Considerations and Responses

In the UK, artists and writers have protested against a government proposal to allow AI companies utilize protected work without permission unless the rights holder signals. Virtually every participant to a government consultation on the idea has supported artists’ concerns.

The secretary of state for science, research and technology told parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the issue, adding that ministers would “take the time to get this correct”. The administration has committed to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
