Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
